How to use beard oil

Using beard oil is an excellent way to keep your beard looking great and feeling soft, but it can be easy to overdo it. It's absolutely possible to use too much—if you use more than what's appropriate for your beard, the excess oil will make your beard look greasy and weigh it down.

It's made up primarily of carrier oils—oils that nourish and protect the skin—and essential oils that give the product its fragrance.

Here are some tips on how to apply beard oil so that it keeps your facial hair in top condition.

The best time to apply beard oil is immediately after you've showered and patted your face dry. You want your skin to still be slightly damp, which will help lock in the moisture from the oil and ensure that it reaches the roots of your facial hair.

- STEP 1:

To optimize your beard experience, start by drying your beard with a towel after washing. While you're drying off, remember not to rub too hard with your towel—do so gently so as not to strip away any of the natural oils on your skin, which can also affect how soft your beard feels.

If you have a particularly long beard, try combing through after towel-drying. Your choice of brush or comb will depend on the length of your beard. If you're just starting out, go with a wide tooth comb that can handle big knots and tangles.

If you want a more polished look, opt for a boar bristle brush that will give some order to unruly whiskers. Either way, use slow strokes and work from the bottom up so you don't pull out any hairs.

If there are any tangles or knots in the hair, work them out now before applying the oil. This step helps get rid of any excess water and leaves your hair in better shape for absorbing the product.

- STEP 2:

The next step is figuring out how much oil you need to use—the amount you use should vary depending on how thick or long your beard is.

For most beards, two or three drops (two if you have a shorter beard) rubbed into the palm of your hand should be enough for the job. A little bit goes a long way!

- STEP 3:

Rub both hands together. The idea is to spread the oil out evenly over both palms so you don’t accidentally dump all of it onto just one side of your face. Also, this method allows you to warm up the oil before application, which will help you apply it more smoothly.

- STEP 3:

Now rub the oil into your fingers and gently massage your chin and cheeks. If you have patchy areas or extra goatee growth, focus on those spots and rub in circles.

Make sure you're working from root to tip: that means from where the hair grows out of your chin down toward the end of your beard.

- STEP 4:

Continue rubbing down under your chin along your neckline until you reach the base of your neck where it meets your chest. This will help prevent “neckbeard” from forming below.

Repeat this process until you've covered every part of it.

Use beard oil once or twice a day depending on how dry your facial hair is.
